When Frodo Baggins first set foot in the Shire, he was immediately infatuated. The land was lush and green, dotted with Hobbit abodes and bounty-filled fields. It was no wonder that Frodo saw his homeland as the most beautiful place in Middle-earth and dreamed of returning there one day.
In fact, the Shire scenes from Peter Jackson's trilogy were filmed in the Waikato town of Matamata in New Zealand--a place that looks remarkably similar to Tolkien's descriptions.
Despite this, Tolkein never once set foot in New Zealand and instead based the depiction of the Shire on England.
