Learning how to measure ring size at home starts with one simple tool: a thin strip of paper. Wrap it around the bottom of your finger, mark where it overlaps indicating the length in millimeters, then divide that by 3.14 to get your diameter. While this isn’t the most accurate way,  we can tell you women typically wear between a 5 to a 7. However, it’s always worth measuring more accurately rather than making the mistake of assuming.

Purchasing anything online is nerve-wrecking. However, ordering a ring online is a whole different story. It’s not the same as shopping in a store, where you get to work directly with  someone and to try on different band widths, sizes, and designs. You shop blindly and don’t always get to return a jewelry purchase if you’re left unsatisfied. The good news is that there are several reliable options to find the right size, most involving not having to leave the house.

It’s important to take note that if you’re ordering a wide or organic-texture band - like our Bark, Branch or Twig collections - the usual sizing rules don’t fully apply here. Below, we have included a section on how to size those styles correctly.

However, in this guide we will go over five different ways to discover yours or your partner’s ring size.

The five methods covered in this guide are:

  1. Visit a local jeweler
  2. Request a free ring sizer
  3. The paper strip method
  4. The string method
  5. Use a ring size chart

How Ring Size Works

In the United States, the ring size scale features whole and half numbers. Generally, standard ring sizes range from a size 3 to a size 13.5 for adults. Women usually fall somewhere between sizes 3 and 9 while men's rings are usually between 8 to 14.

Ring size is determined by the width of a finger and the diameter of the ring. The width of the finger is measured in millimeters. The diameter of the ring can be measured in inches or by using a mandrel.

Whether you’re shopping internationally or just trying to figure out something like the ring size conversion US to UK, use the International Ring Size Conversion Guide below since sizing can vary significantly between countries.

One more important thing to note: wider bands fit tighter than slim bands. A 4mm and a 8mm band, both labelled size 7 will feel drastically different on the same finger - as the wider band will feel snugger. We go over exactly what to do about this in the organic band section below.

What Should a Well-Fitting Ring Feel Like

A well-fitting ring should be able to slide over your knuckle with little resistance. It shouldn’t be painfully tight but it shouldn’t just fall off your hand once you’re relaxed either. At the base of your finger it should fit snugly without cutting off circulation. However, you should feel a little friction once rotating it.

A helpful trick: if you can pull the band straight off without having to bend your finger at all, it’s probably too big. If getting it past your knuckle is a challenge, it’s probably too small.

For wide band fit or organic band width, the fit standard changes slightly. These rings have more contact surface to the skin, so they will feel tighter than a slim band of the same size. While nearly every fine jewelry brand covers basic ring sizing, not one of them addresses what makes Olivia Ewing’s rings different: organic textures, wide bark and twig bands, and handcrafted forms that sit differently than a standard cast band. Olivia uses a comfort fit interior on all wide bands, which significantly reduces this concern - so when in doubt, size up.

5 Ways to Find Your Ring Size At Home

1. Visit a Local Jeweler

The most accurate way to determine your ring size is to have your finger size measured at your local jewelry stores. Jewelers are skilled at measuring finger size and can help you understand what ring size may be the best fitting and most comfortable for you. From using a ring mandrel to a ring gauge, they know the ideal ways to get your perfect finger circumference or ring diameter in mm.

2. Request a Free Ring Sizer

Ring sizers can easily be found online, and typically you can request a plastic ring sizer to your house for a quick and accurate measurement method. However, if you are wondering how to find your partner's ring secretly, this may not be the best option as it may be difficult to hide this item from others.

3. The Paper Strip Method

If you're seeking how to size a ring at home for a cheap and discreet way to measure ring size - consider creating your own ring sizer. To start, simply take a piece of paper and cut it into a thin strip. Wrap the strip around your finger, mark the overlap, measure in mm and then divide by 3.14. Making it a more discreet  choice than a printable ring sizer.

4. The String Method

A great answer to the question of how to find ring size without going to the store is another simple household item trick: the ring sizing string method. This entails wrapping a piece of string or twine around your ring finger and marking it with a sharpie, then measuring the string with a millimeter ruler. However, keep in mind that string can also stretch - so while this is a good backup method to employ,  this shouldn’t be the only method used.

5. Use a Ring Size Chart

A Printable Ring Size Chart is a quick and effective way to find your ring size. A ring size chart is a visual representation of the standard range of finger sizes.

A ring size chart is simple to use. First find the corresponding finger width that corresponds with your ring size on the horizontal axis, and then measure the inner diameter of a ring that fits, match that measurement number to the chart. This is the right way on how to measure ring size in mm to get the perfect fit.

Sizing for Wide and Organic Bands

When it comes to a  ring size for organic or a wide band  with  bark, twig, and branch surface patterns, sizing can get trickier. Mainly, they add a second variable to the design. Think: an irregular inner surface texture can catch on the skin slightly more than a smooth one. This is why organic bands specifically need extra sizing consideration beyond just width.

Wide bands typically fit a half size tighter than all other standard bands. A 4mm and an 8mm band labelled the same size will feel different on the same finger, since a wide band covers more surface area on your finger and creates more friction against the skin.

OEJ’s comfort-fit interior profile affects the feel on the finger - with your normal size potentially fitting tighter than usual. This is because the inner edge of the band is subtly rounded rather than flat, which reduces pressure on the finger and improves wearability in daily wear. We advise, if you’re between sizes on the organic band, always order a size or half size up.

If you’re unsure on sizing, you can use the Ring Size Chart or Ring Resizing page to help you find your perfect fit and resize your Olivia Ewing ring. Explore our bark texture wedding bands and branch ring collection to see our current offerings.

 Tips for an Accurate Measurement

There are a few factors that can cause false reads: knuckle size, dominant hand, time of day, and temperature and ring size all play a vital role.

Fingers tend to change size throughout the day, depending on factors such as heat and humidity, finger swelling, and general movement. Make sure to measure at normal body temperature - not after exercise, a hot shower, or in the cold.  We recommend you measure your finger at night since your finger has had the entire day to adjust to temperatures, movement, and blood flow. Doing so will give you the most accurate read.

Your dominant hand is also typically slightly larger than your non-dominant, so always measure the finger that will actually wear the ring. And if your knuckle is significantly larger than the base of your finger, measure both and choose the midpoint - ensuring that when you Shop Engagement Rings you find the right fit.

How to Find Your Partner’s Ring Size Without Them Knowing

Looking to keep things hush-hush to surprise a partner with their perfect engagement ring? Try any of the following tricks!

Take One of Their Rings to a Jeweler

If you can manage to sneak out one of your partner's rings, one of the most foolproof ways to discover your partner's ring size is to have it measured by a jeweler. If you don't feel comfortable lying to your partner or sneaking behind their back you can always utilize the same methods we outlined above to find their ring size.

Ask Their Family Members for Help

Often, a family member will know your partner's ring size simply by having bought them jewelry in the past. Plus, asking for their help is a great way to include them in the proposal process.

If they aren't sure but are close to your partner, it is less suspicious for them to do some sleuthing than you. Maybe they can browse engagement rings together and casually mention ring size, maybe not bringing up that you want to buy one soon—that way your partner doesn't feel like they've been put on the spot.

Find the Size of a Ring They Already Wear

If your partner already has a ring they wear often you may be able to covertly size it by utilizing a ring size chart. To measure ring size, simply place their ring on top of the circles until you find one that matches up with the inside circumference of the ring.

Compare Finger Size to Your Own Fingers

If your fingers are similar in size to your partner’s, try slipping one of their rings on your own finger and take note where it sits. While it’s not the most precise method, it gives you a reasonable ballpark to work with.

Order a Free Ring Sizer

Order a free ring sizer from Olivia Ewing Jewelry and leave it somewhere casually around the house. If they come across it and try it out of curiosity, you can just say it’s a little tool that you found.

Ask During a Casual Jewelry Browse

Suggest fine jewelry window shopping together, just for fun. While there, it’s the perfect setting to ask your partner their ring size. Frame it with genuine curiosity, rather than a proposal hint.

FAQ - Your Ring Sizing Questions Answered

What Is the Most Common Women's Ring Size?

The most common women's ring size in the United States is a size 6, with most women falling between a 5 and a 7. That said, ring size varies depending on height, weight, age, and dominant hand — so always measure your specific finger rather than relying on the average.

Does Ring Size Change With Age?

Yes, ring size can change over time. Fingers tend to expand gradually with age as skin elasticity changes and fluid retention shifts. Pregnancy, hormonal changes, and weight fluctuation can also cause temporary or permanent size changes. If a ring you've worn for years suddenly feels tight or loose, it may be time to re-measure.

Should I Size Up or Down for a Wide Organic Band?

Always size up. Wide and organic-textured bands have more contact surface against the finger and feel tighter than a slim band of the same nominal size. If you fall between two sizes, choose the larger. Ordering a band wider than 6mm? Start a half size up from your standard measurement as a baseline.

Can I Resize My Ring After Purchase?

Yes — every Olivia Ewing ring is eligible for resizing after purchase. Most standard rings can be sized up or down one to two sizes without affecting the design. Highly textured organic bands have a more limited resizing range before the surface texture is affected. Visit our ring resizing page for full details.

What if I'm Between Two Ring Sizes?

When in doubt, size up. A slightly large ring is easier to resize down than a tight ring is to resize up, and comfort in daily wear matters more than the number inside the band. The exception: if your knuckle is significantly wider than the base of your finger, prioritize clearing the knuckle.

What if You Get the Wrong Size?

If you're struggling to slip that ring on your partner's finger, don't stress. Accidents happen, and they're thrilled enough to simply be engaged to you, but the moment of joy and love you feel in this moment is forever.

Every Olivia Ewing ring can be resized — learn about our resizing policy

If you'd rather take the guesswork out of sizing entirely, explore our Custom Design — Built to Your Exact Size service, where your ring is made to your exact measurements from the very start.

Note: Specific OEJ styles can and cannot be resized. Organic texture bands -such as bark, twig, and branch styles - have limited resizing ranges, as stretching or compressing the metal can affect the surface and the texture. We will always be transparent about what’s possible for your specific ring before any work has begun.
