CANCERS UNITE!
From June 21st to July 22, the sun positions itself within the fourth house of Cancer. The Cancer season is the first sign of summer and the first water sign to appear in the astrological calendar. And such a momentous sign deserves an equally momentous zodiac stone.
Enter the Emerald.
With their verdant green hues and common step-cut faceting emeralds are not only a beautiful stone but also a fortuitous one for any charismatic Cancer. Below, we break down the unique cosmic connection between Cancers and emeralds and how crabs and non-crabs alike can tap into the healing spiritual powers of the emerald.
THE CHARISMATIC CANCER
Now that Gemini season is over it's time to take a breath and put your feet up. Cancer season is here and it brings a whole host of wonderful opportunities to rest, connect with nature, and tap into the well of your deep internal narrative. But what are the characteristics of crabby cancer and, perhaps more importantly, why are they considered classically Cancer?
WHAT ARE THE PROPERTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE CANCER ZODIAC SIGN?
Cancer season is the four astrological season of the year and is sandwiched between the chaotic Gemini season (May 21 to June 21) and self-assured Leo season (July 23 to August 22).
Cancer is a water sign and is, in fact, the first water sign of the zodiac. In general, water signs are believed to be extremely emotional and sensitive. They feel deeply even when, much like the ocean, their emotions are consistently flowing through various currents and streams.
In addition to their watery elements, Cancer is also a cardinal sign that is represented by the crab and influenced by the sixth chakra aka the Third Eye and is ruled by the moon.
WHAT ARE THE PERSONALITY TRAITS OF CANCER PEOPLE?
As we mentioned above, Cancer is a water sign and, true to their element, Cancers tend to be moodier than other elemental aspects such as earth, fire, and air. However, unlike its sister water signs Scorpio and Pisces, Cancer is cardinal- and as such, is considered to be all about trying new experiences, moving around, and innovating life. People who are a sun or rising Cancer are therefore deeply emotional, quick thinking, and big dreaming people. They are protective of their friends, home, and family - they love nurturing and are usually the first ones to send you a Grubhub gift card when you go through a break-up or illness. Finally, Cancer’s are uniquely creative and are known for channeling all of their deep and ever changing emotions into creative works of art or professional ventures. In short: Cancer’s feel a lot, but they get stuff done too, often thanks to the depth of their feelings.
WHAT ARE EMERALDS?
With a long and storied history, emeralds never fail to disappoint. What else would you expect from a jewel that is so highly prized they named a diamond cut after it?
WHAT ARE THE PROPERTIES OF EMERALDS?
The emerald is a beryll mineral and is in the same family of the much beloved aquamarine and morganite. The classic verdantly green color of emeralds is thanks to the presence of chromium, vanadium, or a combination of them both. Essentially, when an emerald is being formed, the chromium and vanadium atoms get together and form within a lattice structure. Occasionally, iron will also be present within emeralds and usually, because of this the emerald will have a blueish tint or shade to it.
An emerald maintains a 7.5-8 Mohs score and is considered a hard stone that can generally be worn everyday. Further, inclusions are incredibly common in emeralds. In fact, if you were to find an internally flawless emerald, than chances are you're not looking at an emerald at all! The most common types of inclusions are liquid inclusions, where a liquid fills a small cavity within the emerald, and fractures, which are the fissures and cracks that appear within the emerald.
Don't be swayed away from emeralds just because of inclusions, while inclusions aren't desirable in other gemstones such as diamonds, many believe they provide character to the emerald effectively making it into the gemstone that is so universally beloved.
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF EMERALDS?
The first known emerald mines were developed in Egypt and lasted from at least 330 BC into the 1700s. As one might expect, Cleopatra was a massive fan of the emerald and was known to gift the precious gem to nobles and dignitaries that she wished to show favor to.
In Columbia, emeralds have been mined since at least the 1500s and are still a major export of the country today with estimates regarding the amount of Columbian diamonds on the market ranging from 70-90%.
In the late 50s and 60s, Elizabeth Taylor started an emerald craze after frequently being spotted with jewelry dripping in emeralds and diamonds. She wasn’t the only celebrity to sport the precious stone, Jackie Kennedy turned heads with a 2.84-carat emerald and 2.88-carat diamond moi et toi engagement ring from JFK. Today, emeralds maintain top position alongside diamonds in favorable stones for celebrity engagement rings. Victoria Beckham, Halle Berry, Megan Fox, and Zoe Saldana, all love the green-hued gem.
WHAT IS THE SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE OF EMERALDS?
For as long as emeralds have been around so has their spiritual and mystical properties. Ancient Romans believed that emeralds were able to help heal painful eyes and provided a soothing balm for weary eyes to look at.
Inca’s believed that the emerald symbolized the teardrops of the moon goddess and would incorporate the stone in their religious ceremonies in addition to wearing it as an accessory or adornment for their outfits.
Legend has it that emeralds can help allow their wearer to see into the future when placed under the tongue. Today, the emerald is viewed as a stone that can help fortify the spirit and overcome misfortune. Wearers are able to maintain a renewed vigor and sense of joy while enjoying a great sense of focus.
CANCERS AND EMERALDS: A MATCH MADE IN THE COSMOS
Now that we’ve gone over the physical and spiritual aspects of both Cancers and emeralds it’s time to discuss why they work so dang well together.
IS THERE AN ASTROLOGICAL CONNECTION BETWEEN CANCERS AND EMERALDS?
Cancers and emeralds work well together for a variety of reasons. Firstly, both entities are deeply connected to emotions and intuition. Cancers, known for their sensitivity and empathy, find solace in the nurturing and soothing energy of emeralds. These gemstones, with their vibrant green color, align with the heart chakra, promoting emotional balance and opening the channels for compassion and love to flow freely. Secondly, emeralds are believed to enhance the natural nurturing qualities of Cancers, enabling them to create harmonious relationships and secure environments for their loved ones.
The calming presence of emeralds can help Cancers in their journey of self-discovery, enabling them to connect with their inner selves and find emotional stability. Lastly, both Cancers and emeralds embody the essence of growth and transformation. Just as Cancers thrive in providing a nurturing environment for personal and emotional growth, emeralds symbolize renewal, rebirth, and manifestation, making them the perfect companion for Cancer individuals on their path to self-realization and spiritual evolution.
