It was there that the later sainted Priest Valentine married young lovers in secret after Emperor Claudius II decreed that young single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families. As with most saints, Valentine met an untimely end when Emperor Claudius discovered his deeds.
Perhaps surprisingly, this isn’t the only origin story of Valentine’s Day…just the most famous. There are three potential Valentine’s of whom were eventually deemed Saint by the Catholic Church and allegedly contributed to the celebration of Valentine’s Day.
Additionally, many believe that the Catholic Church chose to celebrate Valentine’s Day as a Saint’s holiday to “Christianize” and convert pagans from the pagan holiday, Luperci. Celebrated on 2/15, celebrants of Luperci would gather at the cave believed to be where Romulus and Remus were cared for by a She-Wolf. There, they would sacrifice a goat and a dog for both fertility and purification. Women would be playfully slapped with the hide of the stripped goat to increase fertility for the coming year and would place their names in a big urn for the city’s bachelors to choose from-an act, very often resulting in marriage.
TODAY V-DAY IS A SYMBOLIC REPRESENTATION OF LOVE
Thankfully, women are no longer chased around with goat hides on Valentine’s Day (but if that works for you, we’re not here to yuck your yum!). As history progressed Valentine’s Day became more and more about expressing the love felt towards romantic partners.
