Jewelry for Valentine’s Day, please! It often feels like life is coming up roses when you’re in love, and while we’ll never say no to a good chocolate and a sweet-smelling rose, we just feel that roses and chocolate make great everyday gifts of appreciation for your partner. And when it comes to V-Day, you should go a little bigger and a lot more sparklier. (What can we say, we’re Taurus’ at heart.) Cue Miranda Priestly voice: Jewelry for Valentine’s Day? Groundbreaking. But hear us out! Gifting jewelry is never not appreciated. Still doubt us? Read on and find out!
WHY DO WE CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY?
You might feel that Valentine’s Day is a tired holiday that was simply concocted by greeting card companies to boost their sales but in reality, Valentine’s Day has a dramatic and vast origin story that dates back to Rome and continues to delight today.
HOW DID VALENTINE’S DAY BEGIN?
It was there that the later sainted Priest Valentine married young lovers in secret after Emperor Claudius II decreed that young single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families. As with most saints, Valentine met an untimely end when Emperor Claudius discovered his deeds.
Perhaps surprisingly, this isn’t the only origin story of Valentine’s Day…just the most famous. There are three potential Valentine’s of whom were eventually deemed Saint by the Catholic Church and allegedly contributed to the celebration of Valentine’s Day.
Additionally, many believe that the Catholic Church chose to celebrate Valentine’s Day as a Saint’s holiday to “Christianize” and convert pagans from the pagan holiday, Luperci. Celebrated on 2/15, celebrants of Luperci would gather at the cave believed to be where Romulus and Remus were cared for by a She-Wolf. There, they would sacrifice a goat and a dog for both fertility and purification. Women would be playfully slapped with the hide of the stripped goat to increase fertility for the coming year and would place their names in a big urn for the city’s bachelors to choose from-an act, very often resulting in marriage.
TODAY V-DAY IS A SYMBOLIC REPRESENTATION OF LOVE
Thankfully, women are no longer chased around with goat hides on Valentine’s Day (but if that works for you, we’re not here to yuck your yum!). As history progressed Valentine’s Day became more and more about expressing the love felt towards romantic partners.
In the 1800s, the Industrial Revolution was moving and grooving and with it brought innovations with the printing press. Think Valentine’s cards that we know and love and exciting metalwork technologies that made jewelry more accessible to us everyday people. Hence the rise in giving jewelry, the gift that lasts- just like our everlasting love for our sweet valentines.
